Rules, Regulations and Guidelines for Use of Grave Markers, Headstones, Granite Monuments and Lawn Level Markers Within CemeteriesRules, Regulations and Guidelines for Use of Grave Markers, Headstones, Granite Monuments and Lawn Level Markers Within Cemeteries

Cemeteries in Chicago and other Illinois communities have their own unique guidelines, rules and regulations. The Peter Troost Monument Company can answer your questions about the use of upright granite monuments, flat and lawn level markers, bronze markers, mausoleums, headstones and tombstones at most cemeteries. Call 708-544-0916 for assistance.

Some cemeteries permit single or individual lawn level markers while others permit single and double (companion) lawn level markers. Certain cemeteries permit monuments to be used in specific sections on four-grave lots. Other memorial parks do not allow monuments. Some graveyards allow bronze markers and others do not. It is important to talk with Peter Troost Monument Company before you purchase a grave lot or grave plot in order to find out how the cemetery's guidelines will effect the design of your memorial. Sometimes, cemeteries in Illinois and Chicago specify the thickness and height of monument tablets. Other burial grounds dictate that all markers must be bronze on granite. Be aware that cemeteries may require aprons for monuments. Many cemeteries in the Chicago area have specific foundation charges or foundation fees for monuments. These costs are frequently based on the total square feet of the foundation. Cemeteries may restrict the use of ceramic photos. Cemeteries often charge for granite bench foundations and grave ledgers.

The Peter Troost Monument Company has been designing memorials, monuments, markers, tombstones and headstones for Chicago cemeteries since 1889. Our experience with delivering monuments to many different cemeteries in the Chicago area has provided us with the knowledge to help our customers understand the memorial guidelines specified by Chicago cemeteries. We can explain the rules and regulations specified by the cemetery as it relates to the design and placement of a monument or memorial in that cemetery.

For information about rules and regulations related to Catholic Cemeteries in Chicago, the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Cemeteries web site has an informative FAQ page. Click here to visit this web site to learn who can be buried in a Catholic cemetery and how to purchase a grave at a Catholic cemetery. This web site also has published a very informative "Monument and Marker Guide" which explains that the cemetery lot holder normally purchases a monument or memorial from a memorial dealer such as the Peter Troost Monument Company. Most cemteries in Chicago manage the monument foundations in order to take care of the foundation during the future.  The Peter Troost Monument company will deliver and install the monument on the foundation once the foundation at the burial site has been finished.

Memorials and monuments are normally purchased from a memorialist chosen by the lot holder. If the memorial is an above ground monument, the cemetery often pours the foundation and the charge for that is part of your bill from the memorial dealer. The cemetery controls foundations because it must be responsible for that foundation for all future years. The memorial dealer places the monument after the foundation is completed.
